How some fans felt last night.

Open Thread: What's the worst defeat your team has ever suffered?

In the wake of Germany’s rout of Brazil, we want to know the worst defeat you can remember?

‘STOP! STOP! They’re already dead’ was probably the most used Simpson’s quote on Twitter last night as Germany produced one of the most shocking results any of us can remember.

This wasn’t any old team they beat 7-1. This was the World Cup favourites, in Brazil, with a generation spanning unbeaten home record and Joachim Loew’s men eased to a six-goal victory.

The result got us thinking here in TheScore.ie though about other sporting hammerings. Here are some that sprung to mind.

1990 Super Bowl (XXIV)

San Francisco 49ers 55 – 10 Denver Broncos – The 49ers were expected to win the game, they were 13 point favourites but nobody expected them to outscore the Broncos by eight touchdowns to one and have the game won by half-time. The 45 point winning margin remains the largest in Super Bowl history.

2001 All-Ireland SFC semi-final

Meath 2-14 – 0-5 Kerry – This was expected to be a close game with one or two points in it either way. Instead, it turned into a rout. Meath would go on to lose by double scores in the final to Galway.

2012  Heineken Cup final

Leinster 42 – 14 Ulster – Ulster had qualified from a very tough pool including Leicester and Clermont and though Leinster were the defending champions it was expected to be a tight affair. In the end it broke records for the largest winning margin and most points scored in a Heineken Cup final.

But that’s enough about us, what about you? What’s the worst unexpected defeat you remember a team taking? Let us know in the comment section below.
