Disappointment for Irish athletes, as all five fail to progress at World Indoors

Ciara Everard and Roseanne Galligan missed out despite both running season’s best times.

THERE WAS DISAPPOINTMENT for five Irish athletes at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland today.

Mark English came agonisingly close, finishing fourth with a time of 1:47.60 in the men’s 800m. He had needed a time of 1:47.29 to qualify as one of the fastest losers.

Meanwhile, there was heartbreak too for Ciara Everard in the women’s 800m semi-final. The Kilkenny athlete ran a season’s best time of 2:03.69, but her sixth-place finish was not good enough to reach the final.

In addition, Roseanne Galligan also ran a season’s best time of 2:03.30 seconds, but came fifth in her heat and consequently failed to qualify.

Similarly, another commendable performance from David McCarthy still saw him miss out in the men’s 1500m. He narrowly failed to beat his personal best, however, finishing with 3:39.46 — just 0.15sec off a place in the final.

Finally, Claire Tarplee finished seventh with a time of 4:15.64 in the 1500m semi-final this evening, putting her out of contention at the event.
