Three-quarters of Irish TV viewers have tuned in to watch a bit of the World Cup

The number of people watching the games on RTÉ Two peaked during England v Uruguay at 815,900.

OVER 3.2 MILLION people have tuned in to the World Cup at some stage during the event on RTÉ Two, new figures from the state broadcaster show.

So far in the tournament audiences viewing figures are up 30% from the 2010 championship.

An average of 293,000 have watched each game so far.

The most popular match was England’s defeat to Uruguay attracted roughly 572,400 viewers.

This peaked at 815,900.

“RTÉ’s coverage of the Group Stage and Round of 16 from the 2014 FIFA World Cup has proved a massive hit with television audiences in Ireland, with almost 8 out of 10 viewers tuning in at some stage,” a statement read.

“The biggest day for online viewing so far was Tuesday 1 July with 140,000 live streams.”

After tonight, there will be just six games left in the tournament, which continues until Sunday 13 July.
