Ronaldo v Zlatan: here's the European draw for the World Cup play-offs

Portugal and Sweden to meet in next month’s play-offs.

CRISTIANO RONALDO AND Zlatan Ibrahimovic will go head to head for a place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Portugal and Sweden meet in the pick of the European play-offs which will take place on 15 and 19 November.

Ukraine play France, Greece take on Romania, and Lars Lagerback’s Iceland — hoping to qualify for a major tournament for the first time in the country’s history — play Croatia.

Today’s draw is only of minor interest to Irish fans after they finished a disappointing fourth behind Germany, Sweden and Austria in Group 3.

However with seedings for the Euro 2016 qualifiers still to be decided, they will be keeping a close eye on Romania’s fortunes against Greece.

As things stand Ireland are currently inside the cut-off mark to be designated as second seeds, thus handing them an easier route to the finals in France in three years.

But if Romania win both legs of their play-off, they could knock Ireland out of that final spot.
