WE’RE WELL USED to games of football or hurling where the amateur meteorologists decree that the breeze going left to right in the first half is ‘at least a six-point wind’, but in association football, it doesn’t usually have as great a bearing on the score.

Unless, that is, your goalkeeper comes out to loft a clearance right into the teeth of the gale and then can’t regain his senses in time to mop up his mess.
