LESS THAN TWO days removed from a medal-winning performance in the Men’s Elite Time Trial at the UCI Road World Championships, Bradley Wiggins is already looking ahead to next season.
With the dissolution of HTC-Highroad imminent, it looks likely that the Wiggins will share star billing at Team Sky next season with his compatriot and 2011 Tour de France green jersey winner, Mark Cavendish.
Should the signing take place, the team will be placed in the unenviable position of accommodating both the conflicting Grand Tour aspirations and Olympic hopes of its two stars. Cavendish, like Wiggins, expects to challenge for a medal place at next summer’s London Olympics.
“The Olympic road race is five days after Paris. Someone’s going to pay the price for that. Someone like Cav would want to win the stage in Paris and then win the Olympic road race, potentially nailed from the Tour, and it’s probably not going to happen for him. So something’s got to give, whether that’s the green jersey, half the Tour or not even starting the Tour in an attempt to win the Olympic road race.”

Wiggins, who expects to compete in either the Olympic time trial or team pursuit, was also unsure about his own Tour de France prospects, saying he had “no idea” what Sky’s team strategists were thinking.
