Wiesberger secures convincing win in South Korea

The Austrian finished five shots ahead of his nearest rival, Richie Ramsay of Scotland.

AUSTRIAN BERND WIESBERGER was a convincing five-shot winner at the Ballantine’s Championship in South Korea on Sunday.

Wiesberger capped off a superb week at the Blackstone Golf Club near Seoul with his easy win that came thanks to successive rounds of 65 on Friday and Saturday.

On the tournament’s final day a four-under 68 was enough to give him an overall score of 18-under par, which saw him comfortably finish ahead of Scotland’s Richie Ramsay.

Frenchman Victor Dubuisson and Australian Marcus Fraser finished in a tie for third, seven shots off the pace.

“To play the way I did this week is very special,” Wiesberger said.

“I just wanted to get my hands on the trophy. Every sportsman dreams about winning, especially a tournament that has been so well organised and has such great players in the field.”

Wiesberger did not make a blemish after his double-bogey on the 13th on day one and his unbelievable consistency continued on the final day.

He birdied hole five on the front nine and made up further shots on the 15th, 16th and 18th to finish the tournament on a high.

Ramsay was also blemish-free on Sunday, hitting seven birdies in a final-day 65 that saw him leap up the leaderboard.

Dubuisson shot a six-under 66 to complete the tournament while Fraser finished with a 70.

Englishman Anthony Wall and Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez tied for fifth at 10 under, eight shots off the lead, while a group of five players tied for seventh.

Of that group, England’s Ross Fisher and South Africa’s George Coetzee wrapped up the tournament in the best fashion as they both shot 66.

Pre-tournament favourite Adam Scott of Australia shot a seven-under 65 but left his charge too late as he tied for 12th while Ian Poulter of England – who was also expected to fare well – tied for 15th.
