ST PATRICK’S GAA were left celebrating after triumphing in today’s Wicklow Senior Football Championship final replay in Aughrim.
A tight contest saw Pat’s seal a thrilling 0-10 to 0-8 victory over Rathnew, thanks to two last-gasp points.
There was little between the sides for much of the contest, as had been the case in the original encounter, with Shane Murley’s late point rescuing Pat’s on 14 October with that match ending 1-10 to 0-13.
Rathnew went close again this afternoon. They were 0-5 to 0-3 ahead at half-time, 0-7 to 0-3 to the good 10 minutes after the break and led 0-8 to 0-7 after 25 minutes of the second half.
However, Pat’s finished the stronger, with Stephen Duffy and Tommy Kelly getting the two crucial stoppage-time points, while Rathnew’s Mark Doyle was dismissed shortly before then after picking up a second yellow card.
St Pat’s now go on to face Offaly champions Rhode on Sunday in the first round of the Leinster SFC.

They play the intercounty season off early as it was supposed to benefit the clubs yet the club player still gets Shat on
@Mel roberts: why was the reply not last weekend!? This is a joke! Rhode game could easily be put back to next week. Euphoria today and probably defeat tomorrow. Hardly get time to properly celebrate the championship win. Joke.
@Larry Flint: the hurling final was last Sunday and glenealy were in the final of that, a few of the rathnew players played both
I see that the keyboard warriors and couch potato gaa experts are out in force! Wicklow were out of both intercounty championships very early in the summer. This is on Wicklow GAA and the Wicklow clubs themselves. They agreed the fixtures internally.
@tim dawson: seeing as you are such an expert yourself you would know that fixtures aren’t decided by the clubs so I don’t see how any blame can be attributed to the clubs. Agree that its on the county board though. Tyrone were in the All Ireland final and their championship was finished last weekend. No excuse in wicklow
@Mel roberts: ehem, the county board is elected by the club’s. The members of the fixtures committee come from and represent their clubs. That’s how the system works.
The turnaround for tomorrow in the Leinster championship is crazy. No worries for the men in suits. Best wishes to the St Pats panel, ice Bath and massage.
They should not play tomorrow and boycott the Leinster championship. Joke that this is allowed to still happen, it’s not the first time..
Completely the fault of the County CCCC
League was finished m months ago. Too long between the quarter finals and the semi finals and then completely complicated by the drawn final TWO weeks ago
