Wexford Youths earn vital win over Longford Town in relegation six-pointer

Youths are now eight points clear of Longford at the foot of the table.

WEXFORD YOUTHS HAVE moved eight points clear of Longford Town after securing a precious win over their visitors in a crunch match at the foot of the Premier Division table.

A superb free-kick from Johnny Bonner gave the home side the lead at Ferrycarrig Park, before a penalty from Paul Murphy in stoppage-time wrapped up the three points, after defender Yann Mvita was forced to go in a goal following Ryan Coulter’s sending off.

Shane Keegan’s side dominated for large parts of the opening period, without really testing Ryan Coulter in the Longford goal, before Bonner opened the scoring.

The visitors started to show more attacking intent in the second-half, and should have equalised on the hour mark, but Eddie Dsane somehow missed despite finding himself straight through on goal.

But it was Youths who were to grab the vital second goal from the spot to earn their fifth, and perhaps their most important league win of the season.

Wexford Youths: Doyle, Delaney, Grace, Last, McCabe, O’Keeffe, Bonner, Molloy, Furlong, Keenan, Murphy.

Longford Town: Coulter, Mulhall, Haverty, Yann Mvita, Powell, Simon, Hughes, Gannon, Cowan, Dsane, O’Sullivan.
