Westwood gunning for Given's Ireland spot

Sunderland’s new goalkeeper thinks his time will come ‘in due course’.

NEWLY-SIGNED SUNDERLAND goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has set his sights on being first choice for both club and country.

The Irish shot-stopper will face competition from Belgium international Simon Mignolet and the recovering Craig Gordan for the Stadium of Light net-minding job.

But it’s his battle with Shay Given to be Giovanni Trapattoni’s first choice that’ll interest Irish fans.

“Shay is Shay. He’s a great fella and a great keeper,” he’s quoted as saying by SportingLife, “I have been chipping away at him for the last couple of years. Taking that next step was obviously a big personal thing, and that next level is something that will take care of itself in due course.”

The one-time Coventry man made his first competitive start for the Boys in Green in the qualifier victory over Macedonia in March.

Do you think he deserves his shot ahead of Given?
