Keiren Westwood on the lookout for new club as Sunderland cut Irish 'keeper loose

Gus Poyet’s list of ‘retained’ list didn’t include the 29-year-old shot-stopper.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND goalkeeper Keiren Westwood is looking for a new club this summer after Sunderland confirmed that the 29-year-old would not be offered a new contract.

Westwood’s name was one of the notable absentees from a list of retained players issued by Black Cats boss Gus Poyet yesterday.

Andrea Dossena, Carlos Cuellar, Oscar Ustari, Phil Bardsley and Craig Gardner are also heading out of the Stadium of Light, though that latter two have already agreed moves to Stoke and West Bromwich Albion.

Westwood, who has won 17 caps for Ireland, moved to Waerside in 2011 and would have hoped to stake a serious claim for the number one slot when Simon Mignolet departed for Liverpool.

However, the ex-Coventry man suffered a shoulder injury in the first half of this season and has not featured for the Premier League since. Westwood underwent surgery on the injury and did not make it into Martin O’Neill’s squad for this summer’s four international friendlies with David Forde and Rob Elliot making the final 29-man group.
