Welcome back: James Downey returns to Munster from Northampton

The Ireland A inside centre will arrive on a two-year deal at the end of the season.

MUNSTER HAVE CONFIRMED that James Downey will join the club at the end of the current season.

The Ireland A centre has spent five years at the Northampton Saints but returns to Irish rugby, where he has had stints with Leinster, Connacht and, briefly, Munster before moving abroad to play.

30-year-old Downey will bring bags of experience to the midfield, having amassed over 100 games for the Aviva Premiership side.

Munster coach Tony McGahan said on the club’s website: “ James is a quality player who has been on our radar for some time now.

“We’ve seen at first hand, on several occasion in recent times in the Heineken Cup exactly what he has to offer and believe that his style and his attitude can only enhance our squad.”
