Ulster champions Donegal left it very late to make a contest of their Division 1 clash with Laois. Their Leinster rivals were 2-9 to 0-4 ahead – on the back of a rather disappointing and flat display – with 15 minutes, before two goals in quick succession for Anthony Thompson and Neil Gallagher put a much more competitive look on the scoreboard. Despite Laois’ failure to score further, they hung on the for win and for more details, check out our Liveblog. Key man: Padraig Clancy, Laois. Both scorer and supplier, Clancy led Laois’ attacking line all day.

Galway 1-08 Louth 0-11, Pearse Stadium
It ended honours even between Galway and Louth. The Tribesmen started brightly and were 1-5 to 0-2 to the good approaching half time; however, Louth stuck to their task in a determined fashion and came back strongly after the break. The home side scored only twice in the second half while both Andy McDonnell and Paddy Keenan helped their team back on track and should perhaps have lead them to victory had their finishing been more clinical.
Monaghan 0-17 Kildare 0-12, Clones
Solid performances from Paul Finlay and Darren Hughes helped Monaghan secure their first league win of the season. The contest in Clones, however, will likely make headlines for all the wrong reasons as an ugly scuffle between players and team officials just before half-time led to a red card for Kildare’s Brian Flanagan and bookings for Padraig O’Neill (Kildare) as well as Dick Clerkin and Dessie Mone (both Monaghan).
Tyrone 2-15 Derry 0-09, Healy Park
A first half goal from Mickey Murphy and a penalty from Peter Harte were enough to help Tyrone secure victory in the Ulster derby of Division 2. The Red Hands looked fairly comfortable throughout and when their opponents were reduced in 14 men – following the dismissal of Patsy Bradley – there was only ever going to be one result.
Westmeath 0-05 Meath 0-17, Cusack Park
The crowd at Cusack Park might have been expecting a hard-fought encounter between these two local rivals but the in-form play of Meath’s forward lines resulted in a surprisingly facile win for the Royals. Cian Ward and Stephen Bray got their team off the mark early and Westmeath, simply, had no answers to the questions asked of them. Defender Michael Ennis saw red for a second yellow card on 53 minutes and there was even time for a late appearance from Graham Geraghty, though he was denied a goal because of a wonderful save from Gary Connaughton.
