Conflicting reports over status of new Rooney contract

It had been reported he had signed a new €85.5 million deal.

DESPITE REPORTS IN a Sunday newspaper that Wayne Rooney had signed a new £70 million deal with Manchester United, there is still no official word from the club and a number of other reports suggest that while a deal is close, it is not yet complete.

The Sun claimed that Rooney had signed a deal worth over €365,000 per week over five and half years, making him the highest paid player in the history of the Premier League.

However, subsequent reports from Sky Sports News, The Guardian and The Times have claimed that while a deal has been agreed in principle, the finishing touches have yet to be applied.

If the contract is signed, it will mark a massive turnaround in fortunes for Rooney after he appeared to be on his way out of Old Trafford last season but the 28-year old — when fit — has been one of the bright spots for Manchester United in an otherwise disappointing year for the Premier League champions.

United are currently in Dubai on a warm weather break.
