Whyte's Waterford supershow not enough as Shanley-inspired Wexford claim top spot

There was a high-scoring battle between two forwards at Fraher Field this evening.

LATE POINTS FROM Michael O’Regan and Adrian Flynn sealed top spot for Wexford in Division 4 of the Allianz Football League this evening.

The Model men scored a narrow 0-12 to 0-11 victory over hosts Waterford at Fraher Field, denying the Déise at least a share of the spoils following a remarkable fightback.

Waterford trailed by 0-4 to 0-10 at one stage in proceedings but inspired by brilliant forward Paul Whyte, who finished with 0-9, they rallied to level.

JJ Hutchinson scored the equaliser with four minutes remaining to level matters at 0-10 each but David Power’s visitors had a kick left in them.

O’Regan and Flynn pointed and while that man Whyte kicked a late 45, time ran out and Wexford held on for their third win from four outings – moving top of the table on scoring difference.

At half-time, Wexford were 0-6 to 0-3 clear, Donal Shanley on target with all of their points against a Waterford side that failed to register a score from play in the opening half.

Shanley finished with a haul of 8 points for Wexford, just eclipsed in the scoring stakes by Whyte.
