Hurling semi-finalists confirmed in Waterford and Kilkenny while neighbours to meet in Limerick

It was a good day for Ballygunner, Mount Sion, O’Loughlin Gaels, Clara and Ballybrown.

THE SEMI-FINAL line-ups in the Kilkenny and Waterford senior hurling championships were finalised today after the quarter-final action concluded.

In Kilkenny reigning champions Clara and last year’s finalists O’Loughlin Gaels both advanced to join yesterday’s winners Ballyhale Shamrocks and Rower-Inistioge.

While in Waterford, Ballygunner and Mount Sion took advantage of the second chances handed to them by winning their quarter-final ties. The two city powerhouses will now meet each other at the semi-final stage while Passage will clash with Dungarvan.

Ballygunner ran out 4-13 to 0-11 victors over Abbeyside, a week after their game had been abandoned due to floodlight failure at the Fraher Field. Peter Hogan, Brian O’Sullivan (2) and Stephen Power all hit the net for them.

Mount Sion defeated local rivals De La Salle by 0-23 to 1-14 with the teams having finished level after extra-time last week. Austin Gleeson and Martin O’Neill were amongst the winners star performers while John Mullane scored De La Salle’s goal.

In Kilkenny, Clara issued a strong statement as they are attempting this year to land a third county crown in four seasons. County senior players Chris Bolger (1-7) and Lester Ryan (0-5) provided the scoring leadership.

While Sammy Johnson’s goal was vital for O’Loughlin Gaels in their win over city rivals James Stephens. Kilkenny panellists Mark Bergin and Mark Kelly hit 0-10 between them.

In Limerick, the county senior decider will be contested by near neighbours Ballybrown and Patrickswell after today’s second semi-final tie. Ballybrown ran out 2-22 to 1-18 victors over Adare at the Gaelic Grounds to reach their first final since 1995 when they lost out to Patrickswell.

In Laois a replay will be needed after Borris-in-Ossory Kilcotton and Rathdowney-Errill finished all square in a remarkable game that featured 56 scores as it ended 2-28 apiece.
