Whyte the Waterford hero as injury-time score rescues Munster SFC draw against Clare

The teams will replay their clash next Saturday at the Fraher Field.

Clare 2-8
Waterford 2-8

CLARE AND WATERFORD must do it all again in their Munster football championship quarter-final as a late leveller from Paul Whyte earned the Deise a replay in Dungarvan next Saturday.

In the opening half of tonight’s game in Ennis, the Banner had the ball in the net after six minutes. Shane McGrath played a neat exchange with Jamie Malone and after his shot was saved by Stephen Enright, Enda Coughlan was on hand to tap home from close range.

Clare went on to lead 1-4 to 0-2 but out of nothing the Deise got right back in the game. Dean Crowley’s mazy run saw him find Paul Whyte who drove to the net for Waterford. Clare lost Gordon Kelly to a black card for his challenge on Liam O Lionáin but were still in front by 1-5 to 1-2 at half time.

After the restart Whyte and Michael Curry kept Waterford in it before Shane Aherne squared to Liam O Lonain and his effort crossed the line via the bar for a goal that leveled the game.

Clare looked rattled and despite conceding a goal from David Tubridy almost immediately, Waterford never gave in. Two more points from Aherne and Whyte’s effort at the death means the teams will square up again for the right to face Kerry in the semis.

Scorers for Clare: David Tubridy 1-2 (0-1f), Enda Coughlan 1-0, Gary Brennan, Shane McGrath 0-2 each, Jamie Malone, Martin O’Leary (0-1f) 0-1 each.

Scorers for Waterford: Paul Whyte 1-2, Liam O Lonain 1-0, Shane Aherne (0-1f), JJ Hutchinson 0-2 each, Michael Curry, Tadhg O hUllachain 0-1 each.
