The sound of guns firing caused panic in the Mexican city of Torreon during a first division match between Santos Laguna and Monarcas Morelia.

A FIRST DIVISION match in Mexico had to be abandoned this weekend as a gun battle raged around the stadium in Torreon.

The Daily Mail reports that the match between Santos Laguna and Monarcas Morelia was approaching half-time when shots began to ring out.

Players and officials ran from the pitch while pandemonium broke out among the 20,000 supporters inside the ground, none of whom were injured.

The battle raged when gunmen opened fire on security forces patrolling a checkpoint in the immediate vicinity of the stadium.

A policeman was hurt in the attacks as the Santos chairman and his goalkeeper took to the pitch in an attempt to keep the throng calm.
