CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNER Virgil van Dijk is joined by Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi and Juventusโ Cristiano Ronaldo on the three-man shortlist for UEFAโs Player of the Year award.
Van Dijk played a vital role in Liverpoolโs successful European campaign, playing 12 times en route to lifting the trophy.
As well as the Uefa recognition, he is also expected to be a major contender for the 2019 Ballon dโOr, as is Messi.
Barcelona reached the semi-finals before being eliminated by Liverpool, but Messi still managed to enjoy a fine Champions League campaign.
The Argentina star scored 12 goals โ including two against the Reds at Camp Nou โ from 10 matches.
Ronaldoโs inclusion is rather more surprising, given Juventus were eliminated by Ajax in the quarter-finals.
The Portugal attacker scored a respectable six times in nine matches, but that was an unspectacular impact compared to his 15-goal haul in 12 outings the season before.
The shortlist was selected by a jury of 80 coaches from clubs involved in the Champions League and Europa League group stages, plus 55 journalists from Uefaโs 55 member associations.
One of the three players will be presented with the award on 29 August, during the Champions League group stage draw ceremony.
Meanwhile, Lucy Bronze, Ada Hegerberg and Amandine Henry have been revealed as the names on the final three-player shortlist for the Uefa Womenโs Player of the Year award.
The trio were the top-scoring nominees picked by coaches and journalists from players representing European clubs for the 2018-19 season, with all three having won the treble with Lyon.

Oh jaysus I wonder what himself and Kevin Nolan will get up to now theyโre back togetherโฆ.
Good luck to him. Very popular at anfield, everyone wanted him to succeed. My only fear for him is London itself. Doubt the location will be good for his social life, or maybe too good
Ah, Iโd of held on to him.
Super signing for the hammers, I think Rodgers and Tika-taka have made a bad call here
As a pool fan i think this is very short sighted of the manager. Ok he hasnโt done it but to get rid of him without seeing if he could fit could be a mistake. Its not like we are made of money and there is a mass of players wanting to play at a struggling club
He obviously has Sturridge and Dempsey in the bag. Iโm happy. We will have intelligence and guile back at Anfield. Brendan starting at he means to go on.
