IT’S HIS FOURTH year on the Clare senior hurling panel but not until last night had John Conlon been part of a winning side in a championship game.
The Clonlara player has been fed a diet of narrow losses and hard-luck stories in recent seasons but finally Clare’s fortunes turned with an exhilarating victory over Dublin by 1-16 to 0-16 in last night’s qualifier tie in Ennis.
Conlon more than most helped shape this marvelous success. He swung over the last score of the game, an injury-time point from the right wing that clinched Clare’s victory.
The 2009 All-Ireland U21 winner struck four points from play in all and maintained the fine form he displayed against Waterford in the Munster semi-final recently, to offer superb attacking leadership and help ensure Clare pegged Dublin back with a superb second-half display.
