DEAN WINSTANLEY HIT the first nine-dart finish of this year’s Ladbrokes World Darts Championship on Sunday, but it wasn’t enough to stop him from crashing out of the tournament.

Winstanley trailed by two sets to nil when he landed the perfect score against Vincent van der Voort, scoring two 180s before checking out with treble 20, treble 19 and double 12.

Though Winstanley went on to level the second round clash at 2-2, van der Voort had enough to kill off the comeback and seal a 4-2 win.

“I’m distraught to have lost, but I’ve made a great impact and I’m proud of what I’ve done,” said Winstanley, who will pocket a £15,000 bonus cheque if nobody else matches his nine-darter at Alexandra Palace.

“I’m over the moon to have hit a nine-darter on TV, especially in the World Championship, and I’ve proved to everyone that I can mix it with the best.”
