Van Gaal tells United scouts to watch West Brom star

The Manchester United boss has been busy drawing up a list of transfer targets for the summer.

LOUIS VAN GAAL has instructed his Manchester United scouts to keep a close eye on Saido Berahino, Goal understands.

The striker was on target for West Brom in the 2-2 draw with United on 20 October and has caught Van Gaal’s eye with seven Premier League goals from 11 appearances this season.

The Dutchman has been impressed by the Burundi-born 21-year-old and wants his scouting team to monitor the striker in the coming weeks.

Old Trafford executive vice chairman Ed Woodward indicated on Tuesday that there was a “low probability” that United would do any business in January, though it was initially Van Gaal’s intention to bring in defensive cover this winter.

Goal understands Van Gaal and his backroom staff have already drawn up a primary and secondary list of transfer targets for the summer, and United would be unlikely to make a move for Berahino until the end of the season.

Berahino earned his first call-up to the senior England squad for games against Slovenia and Scotland but was an unused substitute in both matches.

And the striker has suggested he may have to leave West Brom in the future to reach the top of his game.

“If that’s what it comes to [leaving West Brom], yeah, it will have to be that,” he told reporters.

“But obviously I appreciate what West Brom have done for me and I am working each day to win the club as many games as I can. Right now I am focused on West Brom.”

The Old Trafford club’s interest in Berahino is not motivated by Falcao’s injury struggles since moving to Manchester on transfer deadline day.

The Colombian has been out of action since the draw with West Brom due to a calf injury, but could return against Arsenal on Saturday.
