David Moyes makes first United signing, Uruguyan defender Guillermo Varela

The full-back arrives from Penarol.

MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE announced the signing of 20-year-old defender Guillermo Varela for an undisclosed fee.

The full-back arrives from Uruguayan side Penarol, for whom he played just one first-team game before departing for the Premier League.

He becomes David Moyes’ first signing since moving to Old Trafford from Everton in order to succeed Alex Ferguson. Varela is now set to join up with the Uruguay Under-20 team, as they compete in the FIFA Under-20 World Championships in Turkey.

The youngster could be the first of many arrivals at Old Trafford in the close-season, with the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Gareth Bale and Leighton Baines rumoured to be interesting United. That could be offset by the possible departure of Wayne Rooney, however.

The England striker handed in a transfer request at the end of last season and is reportedly interesting Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, as well as Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
