Payne still a doubt for Ulster as Muller comes back into the mix

There was also good news for Paddy Wallace who is nearing a full recovery from a long-term knee injury.

ULSTER’S MEDICAL TEAM will assess Jared Payne late this week before making a decision on his fitness for this weekend’s Heineken Cup meeting with Treviso.

The Kiwi, who can play fullback as well as centre, last played for the northern province in the November 2 defeat to Llanelli Scarlets and has been nursing a groin injury since.

Last week, the province was hopeful of having Payne fit and available for the visit to Zebre, but he was not risked.

There was more clear-cut news over the fitness of captain Johann Muller who returned to full training and will be expected to add some much needed experience to the tight five after a time struggling with a calf problem.

Paddy Wallace also made a welcome return to full training, but as the out-half/centre has been laid up since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in February, his return to the fold is most likely to come with Zebre’s Pro12 visit to Belfast in two week’s time.

Rob Herring and Mike McComish suffered knocks in Saturday’s win away to Zebre, but both are expected to train fully tomorrow and come into contention for Heineken Cup duty.

After sustaining an injury playing for Ballynahinch, prop Paddy McAllister underwent a scan which has confirmed a hamstring tear that will require up to six weeks of recovery.
