Two late tries sink Ulster in Cardiff

The Irish province failed to kill the game after a Craig Gilroy try put them in command just after the interval.

Cardiff 23

Ulster 13

A STUNNING CARDIFF BLUES comeback in the last 10 minutes caught Ulster off-guard and saw the Irish province slump to a 10-point in Wales.

Two tries in the final 10 minutes, from Rhys Patchell and Aled Summerhill, proved decisive as the home side bagged their first win in their last three matches.

A converted Craig Gilroy try just after half-time put Ulster in the driving seat, ahead 13-6. But the home side clawed their way back into it through a Patchell penalty, before their heroics in the closing stages.

The first half was a cagey affair with a Patchell penalty Cardiff’s sole response to Ulster captain Paddy Jackson’s two.

Patchell brought Cardiff level with a penalty just after the break before Gilroy finished off an excellent Sam Arnold break for the game’s first try. Jackson added the extras as Ulster looked to take command.

But that was their last score of the game and Cardiff eventually made them pay.

The results sees Ulster stay in fourth spot, although they are now eight points behind leaders Connacht and just four clear of Edinburgh and Munster.
