Ulster Bank League: Lansdowne top the table after away win over St Mary's College

The Dublin derby was comprehensively won by Mike Ruddock’s side after a hat-trick of tries from Cian Aherne.

LANSDOWNE KNOCKED OFF last year’s Ulster Bank League champions 29-9 on Friday night to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Mike Ruddock’s men blew St Mary’s off their home park and were indebted to Cian Aherne for a hat-trick of tries on a chilly night in south Dublin.

Craig Ronaldson opened the scoring for Lansdowne at Templeville Road and Aherne chipped in with his first try of the night to make it 12-0 at the break.

He added two more in the second-half and there was another score from Mark Roche to round out an emphatic win.

Garryowen are up one place to second after they made it three from three by defeating Old Belvedere 34-15 in Dooradoyle.

Barry O’Mahony matched Aherne’s exploits with a trio of tries while Jamie Gavin kicked 14 points.

Young Munster slip up

There was a tight affair in Cork to kick off the weekend’s action as Cork Constitution recorded a one-point win over Young Munster to hand the Limerick men their first loss of the season.

Ivan Dineen and Johnny Holland, who have both featured for Munster in recent months, were the home heroes in a 21-20 win after Con were trailing at half-time.

Clontarf registered their first win of the season after destroying UL Bohemians 35-10 at Castle Avenue.

There were tries for Adrian D’Arcy, Michael McGrath, Timmy McCoy and Evan Ryan as well as a 15 point contribution from the boot of Richie Lane.

Dolphin pulled away from Shannon in the second half of their Division 1A league encounter as their pack took charge to deliver a 31-14 win.

Scores from Rob O’Herlihy and Christy Condon complemented a penalty try and 16 points from Barry Keeshan.
