VIDEO: Failed Panenka costs Udinese Champions League qualification

If you are Brazilian midfielder Maicosuel, it’s probably best to look away now.

WE ALL WATCHED in awe as Andrea Pirlo showed supreme coolness to chip his spot-kick past Joe Hart to send England home back in June.

However, this is what happens when Panenkas go wrong.

Udinese and Braga were tied at 1-1 after 120 minutes of play (2-2 on aggregate) last night meaning a penalty shootout was needed to decided who would be progressing to the coveted Champions League group stages.

After the first four takers had dispatched, Brazilian midfielder Maicosuel stepped up and took a nervous run-up before attempting to outwit opposing goalkeeper Beto – who read the substitute’s intentions and stood firm to catch the ball with ease.

The Portuguese side went on to win 5-4 and, after going out to Arsenal last season, Udinese have now missed out on qualification and a minimum of €20m for a second year running.
