Battle of Dublin v Cork as 2015 and 2016 champions set up Collingwood Cup final date

Tomorrow’s final will see UCD face UCC.

TOMORROW’S COLLINGWOOD CUP final has been decided, with the 2015 champions UCC and current holders UCD going head-to-head.

Last year’s winners needed extra-time to cement their place in the final. After helping his side past Queen’s University in yesterday’s quarter-final, Ben Hanrahan was there again to rescue UCD.

In a repeat of last year’s final, UL went 1-0 up after 11 minutes of play through Garbhan Coughlan. The Limerick FC man found the back of the net from 40-yards, edging the Limerick outfit ahead. Hanrahan equalized just after half-time to keep the South Dubliner’s back-to-back title hopes alive and subsequently send the tie into extra-time.

Jason McCelland gave his side the lead in the sixth minute of overtime, the 2-1 result enough to book UCD’s place in the final.

Meanwhile, 2015 champions UCC now have the chance to add a 13th Collingwood Cup to their Roll of Honour.

Daniel Pender was the Cork university’s hero yet again, having scored their only goal yesterday to progress to the semi-final.

Competition came in the form of Glasnevin-based DCU, with the first set of 45 minutes failing to separate the sides.

Pender found the back of the net just after the restart, before DCU leveled the game up through Rory Feely. His free-kick hit the wall before he made no mistake in finding the bottom corner from distance.

Former Waterford United striker Pender was there for UCC again at their time of need, smashing home a 79th minute strike to propel them into tomorrow’s highly anticipated final.
