TYRONE LIFTED THE inaugural All-Ireland U17 football title after a well-deserved nine-point win over Roscommon in Croke Park this afternoon.

Darragh Canavan, son of Tyrone legend Peter, was the star of the show. He bagged a stunning second-half goal to seal the victory and finished with 1-3 to his name.

It was a happy return to HQ for Canavan and a number of his team-mates who lost the All Ireland Post Primary Schools final with St Ciaran’s, Ballygawley at the same venue back in April.

Tyrone looked out of sight at half-time when they led by 0-13 to 0-5, with Canavan, Ehtan Jordan, Cormac Donaghy and Daniel Miller all looking lively in the opening 30 minutes.

To their credit, Roscommon came to life in the second-half. St Brigid’s midfielder Shane Cunnane, a tremendous prospect, took control in midfield as the Rossies fought back to within four points by the 49th minute.

The Red Hand hit nine wides in the second-half but Canavan’s moment of genius ten minutes from the end put the game to bed. He came racing onto the ball and sent a bullet into the topmost corner of the net.

Roscommon substitute Darragh Walsh clipped over three points after his introduction, but Mark Hayes ran in a late goal for Tyrone to seal the victory.

Scorers for Tyrone: Darragh Canavan 1-3, Ethan Jordan 0-6 (0-4f), Cormac Donaghy (0-1f) and Daniel Miller 0-3 each, Mark Hayes 1-0, Michael Conroy 0-2, Tarlach Quinn 0-1.

Scorers for Roscommon: Shane Cunnane (0-2f), Darragh Walsh (0-1f) and Peter Gillooly 0-3 each, John Martin, Paul Carey, Ciaran Sugrue, Paul McGrath and Albert Looby 0-1 each.
