TYRONE SHADED A fascinating All-Ireland quarter-final at Croke Park as the Red Hands were still standing at the end of a controversial encounter.
A match high on passion and incident was physical from the opening whistle, but Tyrone had the guile to eke out a win.
Monaghan were quickly out of the traps and their early efficiency had Tyrone in a drop of bother as the match commenced at a blistering speed.
Malachy O’Rourke’s side led by 0-4 to 0-1 after nine minutes as Conor McManus (2), Kieran Hughes, and Paul Finlay contributed scores.
Those four points arrived from five shots at the target which provided the Ulster standard bearers with significant encouragement.
But Tyrone improved as the half wore on with Sean Cavanagh repeatedly driving them forward from centrefield.

Cavanagh was instrumental for the Red Hands, who controlled the second quarter with their raw power and ability to break tackles evident.
By the 20th minute Tyrone were back on terms at 0-5 each as Conor Clarke and Cavanagh nailed delightful distance points.
McManus steered Monaghan ahead with a splendid effort from play, but then Tyrone reeled off four points without reply.
Cavanagh and McMahon both hit two each to edge Tyrone 0-9 to 0-6 in front before McManus completed the first half scoring with a beauty.
Two points divided the teams at the interval and some of the players departed for the dressing rooms exchanging words and shoulders.
There was drama when the teams came back on to the field as Martin Penrose was red carded for his role in the altercation.
Monaghan hit two more points from Stephen Gollogly and substitute Dick Clerkin to draw level by the 40th minute.
Then Tyrone enjoyed a burst of supremacy as Peter Harte and Ciaran McGinley struck excellent points for Mickey Harte’s side.
Monaghan’s cause was scarcely aided by the 48th minute red card of Kieran Hughes for a challenge on Mark Donnelly as it remained raw and edgy.
Despite Hughes’ absence Monaghan’s attack still had a good cut to it as replacement Chris McGuinness and McManus scored to bring them back on terms once more.
Tyrone moved the ball quickly, though, and Ronan O’Neill rifled over a crisp point to give them the lead with six minutes left on the clock.
A Cavanagh free subsequently gave Tyrone a two point cushion and it was sufficient as Monaghan’s summer adventure finished.
