Toronto Blue Jays baseball star in hot water over homophobic slur

The offensive phrase ‘TU ERE MARICON’ was stuck to the Cuban’s face in an MLB game against the Red Sox.

TORONTO BLUE JAYS are holding an investigation as to why short-stop Yunel Escobar took to the field against the Boston Red Sox with eye-black stickers that read ‘Tu Ere Maricon’.

The Toronto Star reports that the most common English translation is ‘You are a faggot’ but it could also be interpreted as an emasculating insult.

On Monday, the Blue Jays released a statement that said it does not condone Escobar’s actions. The statement read:

The Toronto Blue Jays do not support discrimination of any kind nor condone the message displayed by Yunel Escobar during Saturday’s game.

“The club takes this situation seriously and is investigating the matter.”

The Jays will hold a press conference on Tuesday evening before their encounter with the New York Yankees.

Several baseball, basketball and American Football stars wear the eye-black stickers to reduce the glare from stadium lights when they are performing.

Major League Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney confirmed that the commissioner’s office will also be looking into the incident.

Escobar has yet to come out with a comment or statement about why he wore the eye-black stickers during the 5-0 win over Boston.
