Tony McCoy wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year award

Darts legend Phil Taylor comes second while athlete Jessica Ennis is third.

JOCKEY TONY McCOY was tonight named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The bookies’ favourite won in a landslide, polling 41% of the votes.

A dazed McCoy was typically humble in his acceptance speech.

This is an unbelievable feeling to be standing in front of so many amazing sportspeople, people I watch all the time on television.

To win this award is very surreal.

I’ve got so many people to thank I don’t know where to start.

I work in a wonderful sport in horse racing, I know they’ve probably spent half the night voting for me, so thank you to them.

The Arsenal fan, McCoy, then referenced a familiar member of the audience.

Lastly Cesc, I’ll be the idiot in the crowd shouting at you when we’re not winning. So I apologise for that.

McCoy finally won the Grand National this year on Don’t Push It. It was the missing piece in a stunning, record-breaking career.

Phil “The Power” Taylor, the 15-time world darts champion came in second in the public vote.

While world and European heptathlon champion, Jessica Ennis, came third for the second year in a row.

McCoy takes a prize which other well-known and successful jockeys like Lestor Pigott failed to earn.

Did AP deserve it? And does a darts player belong the podium at all?
