TONY MCCOY CELEBRATED the 4,000th winner of his career at Towcester this afternoon, marking the milestone with a ride that summed up his genius in the saddle.
After missing out with his first runner of the day, McCoy drove 6/4 favourite Mountain Tunes to win the Weatherbys Novices’ Hurdle.
The 39-year-old, who has been crowned champion jockey 18 times, becomes the first person in the history of the sport to reach the landmark.
His magnificent 4,000 is considerably more than the next most successful jockey, Richard Johnson, who has more than 2,500 wins to his name.
“It was just amazing,” McCoy said. ”It couldn’t have worked out any better.”
Riding in the colours of JP McManus for Jonjo O’Neill, McCoy looked set to come up short in the home straight.
But as the leaders jumped the last, he passed Aidan Coleman on Panama Petrus and then reeled in Jamie Moore and Kris Spin to edge a thrilling finish by half a length.

On the way back to London with the London branch of the Munster Supporters Club. Great game, fantastic atmosphere. Mumhan abú!!! Roll on the QF’s.
How can Declan Kidney not include James Coughlan, he is a monster
Can’t wait for the quarter in Limerick. Leinster or ulster maybe?
Typical munster “fan”, a home quarter final with leinster is not possible.
That’s a bit harsh..
Either munster or leinster have to get ulster so at least one Irish team in the semis. I think it’s set up just right for a Munster Leinster semi.
Although a good chance of both making it an all Ireland final now there’s the biggest club game in history.
At the very least he deserves a start with the “Wolfhounds”
Finally Munster came alive and Zebo was stunning, unstoppable.
Zebo was like an Olympic sprinter out there!
I’m a Leinster fan and am delighted that three of the four Irish province’s are through to the quarter’s but does anyone share my point of view that our obsession with the H cup is damaging the national side…..
No.
Kidney should have selected players who will be around for the next world cup apart from Ross and paulie.
