THE WORLD OF Gaelic games is in mourning today after the death of Premier County great John Doyle, RTÉ reports.

Doyle was a winner of eight All-Ireland Hurling titles – a record he shares with Cork’s Christy Ring.

The Holycross man’s career with the Premier County spanned 18 years and also included 10 Munster titles.

He holds a record 11 National League winner’s medals.

Doyle was widely regarded as amongst the game’s greatest and was voted Hurler of the Year in 1964. He won All-Ireland titles in three different decades.

He was named in the right corner-back position on the GAA Hurling Team of the Millennium in 1999.

After his playing career, Doyle was elected to Seanad Eireann in 1969 and served until 1973.

GAA preside Christy Cooney paid tribute to Doyle.

I wish to express my sincere sympathies and those of the whole of the GAA to the family of the late John Doyle who has sadly passed away today.

John made an immense contribution to the Association over the course of his life.  This spanned from his remarkable success on the hurling field with eight All Ireland medals sharing the honour with Christy Ring, right up to his contribution at national level.

Doyle is survived by his wife Ann, two sons and five daughters.
