Tiger's back, with a new caddy! But where does all this leave Foley?

Tiger Woods announced last night that he’ll be making his return to competitive golf. It’s a move that may mark yet more changes to his entourage.

AS WE REPORTED yesterday, the official stories about the possible duration of Tiger Woods’ injury lay-off just weren’t adding up.

Photographed looking agile and healthy on board his luxury yacht last week, his recovery from a long-term knee injury looked to be complete.

Swingcoach Sean Foley, however, had yet to hear from the 14-time major champion, and was confident that he’d have heard something if a comeback was imminent.

Well, it looks like Sean Foley’s confidence in his (erstwhile?) employer may have been misplaced somewhat. Shocking, I know; he’s usually so trustworthy…

Tiger has announced (via a boring press release on his website) that he’ll be returning to the PGA Tour at next week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational, giving him a guaranteed 72 holes of competitive golf  (there’s no 36-hole cut during the event) to prepare for the following week’s USPGA Championship, the final major of the year, and a little over a fortnight to secure his qualification for the FedEx Cup post-season.

Not content with springing one surprise on the general public, Sam Weinman at Golf Digest is reporting that Tiger is also planning to unveil long-time friend Byron Bell as his new caddy.

Bell, who has caddied for the golfer on three previous occasions, has been professionally involved in several of Woods’ business ventures and is also (as this story on Hollywood Gossip outlines) alleged to have been one of the members of the former world number one’s entourage active in the events that led to his dramatic fall from grace a little over 18 months ago.

Plus ca change.
