Did Tiger Woods deserve his latest two-stroke penalty?

Another tournament, another slap on the wrist for the world’s leading golfer.

TIGER WOODS RECORDED a third round of 66 to move to within four shots of tournament leader Jim Furyk at the $1.4m BMW Championship.

The world number one compiled one of the rounds of the day to lie on -9. ‘I fought my tail off today’ he remarked after his round but was still caught up on a two-stroke penalty from the previous day.

Woods’ second round began with a double bogey six that was then compounded with the penalty addition after PGA officials adjudged him to have moved his ball in trying to remove a nearby twig. He was given a two-stroke penalty at The Masters, in April, after a golf fan, watching at home, reported him to have taken a drop in an advanced position.

Judge for yourself below. Movement or oscillation?

The word of the day, from Woods, was “oscillated”. He said. “You know, it’s one of those things where I thought the ball oscillated, and I thought that was it.  I played the shot, played the round, and then [the officials] in there, they replayed it and gave me two.”

Woods added, “I was pretty hot because I felt like, as I said, nothing happened.  I felt like the ball oscillated and that was it.  I played the rest of the round grinding my tail off to get myself back in the tournament and then go from five to seven behind, that was tough.”

Furyk leads the way on -13 following a round of 69, which was 10 strokes worse than his miraculous 59 on Friday but solid nonetheless. Steve Stricker and Brandt Snedeker are the leading challengers. Graeme McDowell is tied for 41st after a round of 72 while Rory McIlroy dragged himself off the bottom rung of the leaderboard by shooting 68.
