Woods: three back surgeries since 2014. Charlie Riedel

Tiger is back

Now the next question is: will he be any good?

TIGER WOODS WILL make his long-awaited comeback next week.

Woods has confirmed that he will play at the Safeway Open in California, the opening tournament of the new PGA Tour season. It will be his first competitive round since August 2015.

Plagued by back problems, the 14-time Major winner underwent surgery three times in the space of 20 months and has not played in a Major since finishing 17th at the Masters in 2015.

The eyes of the sporting world will be on Silverado Resort next week to see how Woods fares after such a long absence. Friend Jesper Parnevik revealed this week that “on the range, at least, his trajectory and ball flight are like the Tiger we knew 15 years ago.

“Comebacks are never a sure thing, but something tells me his might be spectacular.”

In a statement last month, Woods indicated that he also intends to play at the Turkish Airlines Open in November and at the Hero World Challenge in December, as well as at his own Tiger Woods Invitational which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of next week.
