Galway camogie star Therese Maher retires from inter-county game

Maher finally won an All-Ireland senior medal last year.

GALWAY CAMOGIE STAR Therese Maher has brought the curtain down on her inter-county career.

Maher finally won an All-Ireland senior medal last September after 16 years of lining out for the Connacht side. She had lost five finals previously with defeats in 1997, 1998, 2008, 2010 and 2011.

The 33 year-old is set to continue playing camogie with her club Athenry but bows out on a high note after being named player-of-the-match in that decider last year when Galway defeated Kilkenny by 1-9 to 0-7.

Maher revealed her delight after that game with the victory.

“I had a lot of emotions I think when the final whistle went. I was relieved, ecstatic, delighted and just thrilled to finally get over the line and get that elusive medal that I’ve been trying so hard to get. Today makes up for all of those (disappointments).

“The county has come up here year on year and we have got so far, but have never got over the line”, revealed Maher. “I think for followers of Galway camogie, for young people, there was busloads coming up here today and for them and for their parents, brothers, sisters, boyfriends, the people who have been supporting us day in day out, we needed a win. I’m just glad we got over the line here today.”

Agreed but I also think it adds to the authenticity. Couldn’t help but read it in a French accent! Nice work, Irish fans.
