IT’S THAT TIME of the year again — but let’s remove all the crap out of the ‘New Year, New You’ health phenomenon and cut straight to the chase.
We all want to make a positive change in our lives in some form or other, but there are ways and means to go about it.
Embarking on an unsustainable fitness journey with the intention of achieving unattainable results in the space of a few short weeks is, well, unsustainable.

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, we’re probably all a little guilty of diving in at the deep end and complicating matters but strip it all back and improving your health and well-being — both physical and mental — requires time, effort and commitment.
There are no shortcuts. Exercise and healthy eating has to become your life, not part of it.
So we’re not going to recommend a four-week quick-fix plan which is supposedly designed to make the scales drop an inordinate amount and for you to develop muscles in places you didn’t know was even possible.
This is not a rigid plan we’re forcing you to adhere to for the next seven weeks. The42‘s Gym Series will hopefully enlighten, motivate and inspire your workouts and training this January.
We are not guaranteeing results between now and the end of the month and we are certainly not pushing this out as gospel. Living a healthy lifestyle is about adapting, flexibility and sustainability.
Use these seven workouts as your own, pick and choose exercises or simply take inspiration from them; do what you will but the idea of The42‘s Gym Series is to empower those of you who want to embark on a fitness journey and provide current and factual information to those already on it.
With the help of SMART Training, we’ve designed seven workouts of three exercises each to roll out over the course of the next two months.
This week, we’re focusing on chest and these are the following exercises we’re incorporating into our session:
Incline dumbbell thumbs up chest press
Hover plyo press-up
Double arm flies
Personal trainer, and former hockey international, Jonny Bruton guides us through each exercise and how to perform and execute them correctly in the above video.
