The competition, which is in its 401st year, oddly enough sees competitors stuff straw in their trousers and attempt to boot the shins off each other while grappling in a field.
It’s a skilful sport,” event chairman Graham Greenall says with a straight face.
James Wiseman, one of the judges, adds: “They (fans) like to see people get hurt. It’s the same reason people watch Formula One and wait for the crashes.”
