The Morning Score: Wednesday

The Morning Score was unaffected by yesterday’s budget. It’s still free.

1. #CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas slammed his critics after Chelsea booked their place in the last 16 last night.

The Blues 3-0 win over Valencia was a ‘slap in the face’ to those who doubted his side during their recent dip in form, he insisted.

The Premier League side progressed as winners of he group with Bayer Levekusen drawing in Genk. Arsenal were beaten by Olympiakos but had already secured their passage.

2. #CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Tonight, Manchester is centre stage. United take on Basle knowing they must avoid defeat to stave off a financially damaging early exit from the tournament while City host Bayern Munich.

AC Milan last night confirmed they had emailed a loan offer to Eastlands for Carlos Tevez and have already agreed  terms with the player.

3. #LEGEND Jim Stynes has been given new hope in his battle with brain cancer. The AFL legend cancelled a planned ‘farewell barbecue‘ for friends and family when doctors decided they could indeed operate and change his medication again.

4. #AMERICAN DREAM The NFL delegation which visited Croke Park last Friday were impressed by what they saw, according to Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney.

“They thought that the stadium itself was excellent and the professional manner in which is run impresses them,” said Rooney, speaking on Newstalk’s sports programme Off The Ball.

5. #SPOT ON Robbie Keane scored twice yesterday as the LA Galaxy sealed the Hyundai Club Challenge title with a penalty shoot-out victory over Melbourne Victory at the city’s Etihad Stadium.

The tie – which ended 2-2 after 90 minutes - was probably David Beckham’s last for the MLS side. Melbourne took a 2-0 lead in the first half but a brace of spotters from the Ireland skipper either side of the break saw the Galaxy draw level, before winning it in the shoot-out.

7. #INJURY Munster may be waking up to life without winger Doug Howlett this morning.

The province confirmed yesterday that the All Balcks legend would go under the knife to resolve an achilles injury and will miss the rest of the season.

This is the final year on his contract, though Tony McGahan indicated the Kiwi was keen to remain in Cork.
