1. #NATIONS CUP The Republic of Ireland hammered Northern Ireland 5-0 at the Aviva Stadium last night.

Stephen Ward scored a debut goal before skipper Robbie Keane notched his 47th and 48th international strikes either side of a Craig Carthcart og. Simon Cox also marked his international bow with a fine strike.

2. #RÁS The third stage of the An Post Rás produced a new overall race leader in Lithuanian Gediminas Bagdonas who rides for the An Post Sean Kelly team.

3. #AWOL Wigan manager Roberto Martinez says Ireland midfielder James McCarthy will miss the rest of the Carling Nations Cup campaign with an ankle injury.

Martinez revealed the Latics had sent the relevant medical reports to the Irish camp, a day after Giovanni Trapattoni inferred that McCarthy, had not returned his calls ahead of last night’s clash with Northern Ireland.

4. #CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Old Trafford saluted one of Fergie’s Fledglings last night as Gary Neville hosted his testimonial game.

But earlier it was another veteran, Ryan Giggs, who endured another day of unwelcome attention.

Having been named by a British MP as the player at the centre of the Twitter privacy row, the United manager was overheard vowing to ban an AP reporter for asking about Giggs.

5. #FRENCH OPEN Rafa Nadal survived a Rolan Garros scare against marathon man in a five-set thriller.

The Spaniard eventually won out 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. Earlier Any Murray and Maria Sharapova progressed.

6. #BOYS OF SUMMER Cork last night named their side to face Tipperary in the Munster SHC clash at Semple Stadium on Sunday.
