The Morning Score: Thursday

Here’s everything you need to know this morning – apart from where you left that umbrella.

1. #CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Manchester United and their cross-town rivals City were last night dumped out of Europe’s elite club compeition.

Alex Ferguson saw his side lose 2-1 to Basle in Switzerland. At Eastlands, Bayern Munich were defeated 2-0, but Napoli’s win over Villarreal means the blue half of the city must also now prepare for the unglamourous Europa League.

Here’s how all the action unfolded.

2.#NFL American football chiefs last night told TheScore that they were very impressed by Croke Park on their visit to Dublin last Friday.

A team of high-ranking officials visited Jones Road last week as part of a whistle-stop tour to scout out European venues for a second overseas match on the NFL calendar.

“They did a very nice job of hosting us and showing us what they were capable of providing for our game. The stadium has many of the elements we need to host a successful game,” Chris Parsons, the NFL’s Vice-President of International Business and leader of the delegation said.

3.#RWC2023 Sport minister  Leo Varadkar says he is ‘very interested’ in looking into the possibility of Ireland hosting the Rugby World Cup.

“It would be great to host a major tournament like the Rugby World Cup in 2023,” he said yesterday. “It would require discussions with the IRFU and others, and there are usually significant cost implications in these matters. The country is also struggling with the Budget at the moment.

“But it’s something I’d certainly be very interested in exploring further with the IRFU.”

4.#TOP MAN Giovanni Trapattoni beat the likes of Brian Cody, Pat Gilroy, Michael O’Neill and Joe Schmidt to yesterday take the Phillips Sports Manager of the Year for 2011.

5.#LONDON 2012 Annalise Murphy yesterday booked her place at next year’s Olympic Games.

The 21-year-old, who sails with the National Yacht club in Dun Laoghaire, is currently second in the Laser Radial discipline at the ISAF World Championships in Perth.
