3. # CORK After the County Board offered him two more years at the helm, Rebels football boss Conor Counihan will make a decision on his future clear in the next week.
4. #MAGNERS LEAGUE Tony McGahan has made four changes to the Munster side that thumped Toulon last weekend as Treviso visit Limerick tonight. Scott Deasy starts at fullback while John Hayes, Donnacha Ryan and James Coughlan have been promoted from last week’s bench. Ronan O’Gara will skipper the side as Denis Leamy starts on the bench. Paddy Wallace, interestingly, will start at out half for Ulster as they face Edinburgh in Murrayfield this evening.
5. #GUMSHIELDS GAA chiefs are considering plans to make gumshields compulsory after Central Council officials discussed the matter. The move – coming not long after the imposition of compulsory helmets – is in an effort to curb mounting costs of insurance payouts.
6. #LIVERPOOL Manager Roy Hodgson has dismissed talk suggesting he was on the verge of quitting. After his side earned a creditable goalless draw away to Napoli last night, Hodgson insisted there was no veracity in the rumours which swirled yesterday.
7. #ILLEGAL PAY Stephen McGuinness – the head of the footballers’ union in Ireland – fears that clubs here will return to a system of paying players illegally due to increasing financial concerns. The PFAI discussed the matter at their AGM last weekend where delegates were sounded out about receiving wages in cash – thus dodging the tax process. Pat Dolan, meanwhile, insists in this morning’s Irish Daily Star that the fall-out from this week’s crowd trouble at the St Pat’s v Shamrock Rovers cup semi-final was ‘overblown’.
8. #GOLF Ryder Cup star Rory McIlroy saved himself some embarrassment by making the half-way cut in the Egypt Open yesterday – despite continuing to struggle with his swing in Cairo.
