Tesco are giving out free prawn sandwiches with copies of Roy Keane's book

The supermarket chain have made a sly reference to one of the United legend’s most famous quotes.

HAVING DROPPED THE ball by putting copies of Roy Keane’s new book on sale prematurely, Tesco redeemed themselves in fine fashion recently.

The supermarket chain are now offering free prawn sandwiches for every copy sold of The Second Half — Keane’s collaboration with Booker Prize-winning Irish author Roddy Doyle.

It is of course a sly reference to one of the Ireland assistant boss’ most famous quotes, in which he derided some of Manchester United’s less passionate home fans.

During the height of his powers as a player, Keane remarked: “Away from home our fans are fantastic, I’d call them the hardcore fans. But at home they have a few drinks and probably the prawn sandwiches, and they don’t realise what’s going on out on the pitch. I don’t think some of the people who come to Old Trafford can spell ‘football’, never mind understand it.”

Alex Ferguson had some kind words to say about Roy Keane in Dublin the other night>

Who’s that beardless stranger? Oh wait, it’s Roy Keane!>
