Terry Connor appointed Wolves manager until the end of the season

After they were turned down by a series of unemployed manager, owner Steve Morgan looks to Mick’s former assistant.

WOLVES HAVE CONFIRMED that Mick McCarthy’s former assistant Terry Connor will take charge of the club until the end of the season.

Connor has been offered the post for the remaining 13 games of this campaign, but only as caretaker, and will face a tough first test when Wolves travel to Newcastle on Saturday.

The Black Country side have struggled in their search for a manager after being turned down by former Rangers boss Walter Smith and twice by Alan Curbishley, so they have appointed Connor while they prolong their search for a permanent replacement.

“Since we made the difficult decision to part company with Mick, we have been through a diligent process of assessing potential candidates,” chairman Steve Morgan said on the club’s official website.

“Having spoken to a number of people we have drawn that process to a close and myself and the Board are unanimous that Terry is the right man to lead the Club for the remainder of the season.”

“This is a decisive step, which creates certainty, and the players are fully behind it. As a club, whether that be staff or supporters, we now all need to unite behind Terry and the players and secure as many points as possible over the next 13 games.”

Connor was appointed reserve team manager in 1999 and was McCarthy’s assistant for three-and-a-half years before the former Ireland boss was sacked.

Regardless of all the permutations, one thing remains unchanged – UEFA should reinstate goal difference as the primary way to separate sides the with the same points.

Nice work, but a little confusing where you write: “Should Russia gain a draw [against Slovakia], then Ireland can only qualify in the highly unlikely scenario that they fail to beat Andorra in their final game.” What you mean is that Ireland then could only win the group in that highly unlikely etc. Elsewhere you’ve been using ‘qualify’ to mean ‘come first or second’, which is fair enough. Especially since coming second could still mean automatic qualification as best second-place team: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2012_qualifying#Ranking_of_second-placed_teams

Thanks Harry. I’ve altered the sentence slightly to make it clearer.

What about the best second place team , they qualify automatically. Can we do that?

It’s still mathematically possible, though it would require a number of results in other groups to go our way.
