Swedish match abandoned after player throws corner flag into crowd like a javelin

Tobias Sana lost his cool last night.

THERE WERE EXTRAORDINARY scenes in a Swedish top-flight match last night as the referee was forced to abandon proceedings following a confrontation between a player and fans.

IFK Gothenburgโ€™s meeting with Malmo was abandoned after 78 minutes when a firework was thrown from the crowd and exploded under the feet of a substitute as he warmed-up.

Tobias Sana reacted angrily and walked towards the section of Gothenburg supporters, before ripping the corner flag out of the ground and firing it like a javelin towards the terrace.

The Swedish international was restrained by fellow players before being escorted down the tunnel by security personnel.

After discussions which lasted half an hour, the officials eventually decided to abandon the game as they were unable to guarantee the security of the players and fans inside the ground.

โ€œI heard the banger, I looked over and saw Tobias Sana bend down. After that it went quickly, I blew the whistle and got the players in directly,โ€ the referee said afterwards.

What has gone wrong with Athletes in Ireland. It must be our worst ever Olympics. The Irish records for field events like the shot put dates back to the 1980โ€ฒs. Yes we canโ€™t get thousands of women out jogging and mini marathons. There is no one moving into the sport. The men are no better. We have one last hope Robert Hefferen in the 50 k walk. Best of luck to him.

Thankfully our boxersโ€™ successes overshadowed our embarrassing results in athletics.

Track and field in Ireland is just a disaster. One flop after another these games, very few PBs or SBs from our athletes compared to other nations where there athletes are peaking at the right time.
