THE USA’S HOPES of winning a fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal in the women’s football event has come to a surprise end at the quarter-final stage.
Defeat to Sweden on penalties will come as a massive shock to the World Cup holders, after the USA reached every final of the event since it was first included in the 1996 Games, winning four gold medals and one silver over that period.
Sweden, who are coached by former USA manager Pia Sundhage, won the shootout 4-3, after Christen Press put her attempt over the bar, leaving Sweden’s Lisa Dahlkvist to secure the winning penalty.
Earlier in the game, substitute Stina Blackstenius gave the underdogs the lead after the hour mark, with Alex Morgan scoring with 13 minutes remaining to take the game to extra time.
The result means that the reigning world champions still have never gone on to win an Olympic gold.

About time…… Solo at the end, unsportsmanlike with the glove change, took very long….. Nice to see the refs not being intimidated by them for a change.
Or is that you?
Her brother Han was some boy for the smuggling so he was..
She has a strange style in pens. Kinda jumps to a side early. I thought she was considered worlds best female keeper. Didn’t watch match just caught the shoot out.
The one save was very high up, but other than that, she was as far away as finding the holy grail….
Watched a few of the women’s matches, standard is absolutely horrendous, hardly a goal scored when there’s not a huge gulf between the teams, final ball is shocking in all the matches
Yer woman solo called the Swedish cowards afterwards. Someone’s a sore loser.
Bit confused here. The USA have won 4 golds and a silver since 1996, yet have still not gone on to win an Olympic gold??!!
