Swanning about: Walsh settles in by Bondi

Tommy Walsh is adapting to life in Sydney and has been given Tadhg Kennelly’s old jersey.

IT’S NOT EASY. Not as easy as Tommy Walsh makes it look anyway.

After two years with Melbourne club, St. Kilda, the former Kerry star is settling into life and pre-season training with the Sydney Swans. Naturally, he got chatting to AFL.COM about the local climate:

“Yeah, it’s a great city i’m enjoying the weather. It’s been a bit cold lately but that suits me – I am enjoying it, it’s a good place to live.”

“I feel like I’m at home, but I definitely don’t look like I’m at home. The pale skin and the big Irish head – I suppose I’d fit in there now (Bondi) because there’s so many Irish.”

Joking aside, Walsh spoke about the serious business of intense AFL training and the areas he’s had to put in most effort:

“It’s been solid since we came back really, we had a very tough session first day back and just kicked on from there - It’s tough work, but I expected that.”

“Because I’m new (the focus is on) the gameplan and everything, just leading patterns and my follow-up work” said the 23 year old, adding, ” I suppose everyone’s got a lot to work on, but you’ve just got to keep plugging away and hopefully it comes together.”

Walsh will wear number 17 for the Swans, the squad number held by Tadhg Kennelly until his retirement last year and he couldn’t resist a friendly swipe at his All-Ireland winning team-mate:

“Big boots to fill, big head to fill aswell, I just hope I don’t lose my hair as quickly as (Tadhg) did.”

The AFL season will kick off in little over six weeks time and Walsh will get a chance to make his Swans debut during the NAB Cup.
