Moving fast: Suarez apologises for 'inexcusable' bite on Ivanovic

Managing director Ian Ayre said the action was ‘not befitting of any player wearing a Liverpool shirt.’

LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB have moved quickly to attempt to remedy the controversy surrounding striker Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan deliberately moved to bite Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during today’s thrilling Premier League encounter which ended 2-2 thanks to a late goal from Suarez himself.

“I am deeply sorry for my inexcusable behaviour,” the striker said in a statement released on his club’s website.

“I have issued an apology and have tried to contact Branislav Ivanović to speak to him personally.

“I apologise also to my manager, playing colleagues and everyone at Liverpool Football Club for letting them down.”

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers was tight-lipped on the matter in the immediate aftermath of the game and captain Steven Gerrard also stopped short of condemning the action, telling Sky Sports.”Sometimes when you’re playing Chelsea in the Premier League things get a bit spicy.”

In the statement, Rodgers said:  ”Having reviewed the video footage and spoken to Luis, his behaviour is unacceptable and I have made him aware of this.”

With the dust settled, the club as a whole now appear eager to meet the matter head on, even apparently accepting that further disciplinary action was inevitable.

“Luis has made an unreserved apology for his actions today.” Said managing director Ian Ayre.

“His behaviour is not befitting of any player wearing a Liverpool shirt and Luis is aware that he has let himself and everyone associated with the club down. We will deal with the matter internally and await any action from the FA.”
